The LINS institute:  investigating Earth's space environment

Earth’s  space environment below about 600 km altitude is a dynamic region where the ionosphere and thermosphere interact.   In this region Low Earth Orbit (LEO) spacecraft experience strong aerodynamic drag.  During periods of strong magnetic activities, satellite drag can vary appreciably.   In the presence of environmental disturbances, precise orbit determination is a serious challenge for applications of laser communication.  Meeting these new demands requires a better specification and forecast of the satellite drag environment.

What We Do

At LINS,  we're focused on better understand physical interactions between the thermosphere and ionosphere.     We are currently  analyzing satellite data for better specification and forecast of the satellite drag environment.
